Would you like to enjoy tropical warm weather in Basel right now? You can! Take off your winter coat and enter the Tropical Greenhouse at University of Basel’s botanical gardens next to the Gate of Spalen.

Warm & Tropical
It’s not just a catchy intro, Basel’s Tropenhaus really is warm and humid. So that you don’t sweat too much, there are lockers at the entrance where you can drop off your winter jacket and don’t have to worry about people stealing anything. See the fourth slide-show picture.

What to see?
At first, you will discover many tropical plants and flowers, such as banana trees and orchids. There’s also a real Swiss chocolate tree (a cacao tree) right next to the path. You will hear many birds and will likely see a few. At the pond, you can spot lung-fishes and turtles, but the ultimate “price” is Basel’s mascot: the basilisk. He often hides above the pond on one of the overgrown tree trunks. Look carefully, but also don’t be disappointed if you cannot see him. He’s an expert in hiding!

Hours & Entry
The Tropenhaus is open daily 9am – 5pm. Entry is free of charge. No dogs are allowed. Watch your step when you enter, there is a crocodile warming!
